Aloha K8 Families!

....and welcome back to school! I hope you all had a restful two weeks and are ready to tackle the remaining weeks of the school year. Many families are asking about the expected percentage in k12 by the end of the year. A good guideline to follow is 8-10% completion in each subject each month  that your child has been in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

We have already begun the enrollment process for the next school year. If you know of any new families who might be interested in hearing more about our program, we will be holding information meetings on the following dates. All meetings begin at 6:00 and are held at the middle school campus on Lipoa Ave.

Information sessions for new students: April 10, April 22, May 7, May 20

The week of April 29 will be "Spirit Week!" To kick off the week, we will have a talent show on Monday, April 29. If your child is interested in participating, they must contact their teacher to discuss what talent they would like to share with the other students. Times for the show TBA.

And finally, here are some important dates for the last quarter:

Week of April 29 - Spirit Week! (check your child's grade specific blog for details)

May 3 - Final round of HSA testing at the middle school campus - 12:15

Week of May 20 - Exhibitions - information to follow on grade specific blogs; Last days of face to face classes.

June 5 - End of the year brown bag picnic at Kam III beach park; 10:00-12:00

June 6 - Last day to access on line school; Final k12 percentages should be updated by noon.

Happy Spring!

School Year 2013-2014

Aloha K8 Families,

We are already planning for the next school year, and there will be some changes in the K8 program that you should be aware of. In an effort to increase value added face to face time, the schedule for students in grades 5 - 8 will increase to a mandatory three days per week. The time will be 8:00 - 12:00 on those days. This does not include any academic support that students may need. Those days/times would be in addition to the schedule. This increase in days/time will allow students to go out into the field for hands on learning experiences, as well as attend the necessary classroom instruction.

The schedule for students in kindergarten through grade 4 will remain the same.

As always, our schedule is enrollment dependent, so as in every year, we will not know which days the students will come to classes until early July. Your teacher will contact you as soon as possible.

The first day of online school for the next school year is July 29. The first week of face to face instruction is the week of August 12.

The scheduled information sessions for the K8 Virtual/Hybrid program are: February 26, March 6 and March 11. All dates are at 6:00 and are held at the middle school 6th grade classroom on Lipoa Ave. If you know of any families who are interested in attending our program for the next school year, please encourage them to attend one of the meetings.

Please don't hesitate to ask any one of the teachers questions about the plan for next year, or you can call me at 357-5213.

Power School Training (5th- 8th Grade ONLY)

To all 5th-8th Grade Parents/Guardians:

This week we will be hosting two Power School trainings at Kihei Charter School.  We expect all parents/guardians not familiar with the program to attend one of the two trainings.  As part of the virtual program, parents/guardians and students should be familiar with PowerSchool and know how to check grades online.  In fact, this should be a weekly habit.

The trainings will cover the basics of PowerSchool:  how to login, how to look at students' grades, how to get more information about assignments, how to know if an assignment was turned in, and how to know which grade will be on the final report card in December.  The number of tardies & absences can also be seen.

We have two dates set in order to accommodate your schedules:

  1. Wednesday, December 5th, 12:15 PM @ St. Theresa's
  2. Friday, December 7th, 12:15 PM @ the KCS Lipoa Campus

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!  Aloha,

-Carmen Calderon

Fall Break

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our fall break starts next week (October 15-26th).  There will be no face-to-face classes during this time.  Please have your student continue to work on your K12/Aventa program during the break.  All students should be at 20% by the end of fall break (25% is perfect).  Also be advised that your child does have work that was assigned for the face-to-face classes that must be completed and turned in the first day of Quarter 2.

Quarter two begins the week of October 29th at St. Theresa's.

Drop off!

Attention Kindergarten Parents!

Drop off is not a playtime. Parents need to either sit quietly on the benches with their student of drop them off no more than five minutes early so that they can be directed to the benches and supervised by the teacher in charge of the outside area.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Drop Off / Pick Up Protocol

The KCS Virtual/Hybrid Academy Staff appreciates your efforts to make sure that your child is safely dropped off and picked up at St. Theresa’s.  In order for us to maintain the safety of our students, to allow us full advantage of our instruction time, and to lessen student distractions, we ask that you adhere to the following:

Students in K-1:  Your child’s teacher will contact you regarding drop off and pick up protocol.

Students in 2-4:  Please drop off your child at the curb/entrance to the foyer, and, the staff member taking attendance, will assist your child.  After class, your child will be seated at the picnic benches.

This procedure should begin Thursday, August 30….

Students in 5-8:  Please drop off your child at the curb/entrance to the foyer, and, the staff member taking attendance, will direct students to the picnic benches.

This procedure should begin Wednesday, August 29….

Due to this year’s number of students on campus at one time, the K-8 Staff requests that parents and siblings avoid remaining around classrooms, before, during, or after class.  If a parent needs to meet with a teacher, please arrange an appointment outside of school hours.  Parents, please drop off and pick up your child ON TIME.  We anticipate this to be a great year.  Your cooperation is encouraged.

MAHALO,

The K-8 Staff

The First Week!

You will also want to mark attendance for the day. If you have any questions feel free to email or call me lbaldridge@kiheicharter.org or 357-5213.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to attend one of the parent training sessions. It has been great to have the support of returning families and to meet the new families. We are off to a terrific start!

The first day of school will set the tone for the school year. Be sure to set up an appropriate learning space, make your expectations clear and take time with your child to establish rules and routines. The focus of the first few days should be on what is going to happen and how. Start with work that is manageable for your child to keep everyone feeling positive and motivated. Please remember learning should be fun, for you and your child.

Be sure to review the Kihei Charter School Handbook. Signature pages will be available at the Meet & Greet’s.

Logo wear is required for class time, and T shirts are on order if you have not yet purchased yours. I will let you know when they arrive. They will be on sale at the front desk at Lipoa for $8.00.
